Ways to Give Now, Ways to Give Later…

I got a letter in the mail yesterday from a local mortuary to start planning for my death. They offered a fancy meal, so I might just go check it out and lock in 2025 pricing. Being only 52 years old, it could be a good deal in the long run! All kidding aside, it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom as you plan for your legacy. There are other parts of planning for end of life that might actually bring you joy - like planning for family and your favorite nonprofits!

I have been thinking about my own legacy lately, especially as I have conversations with our faithful donors about theirs. I give to several organizations and looked at what I'd need to leave in my will to maintain my annual giving.

It wasn't as much as I thought!

Here's the math:

  • for a $100 annual gift, a gift of $2,000 at death to an endowed fund will provide that in perpetuity.

  • For a $500 annual gift, a gift of $10,000 at death.

  • For a $1,000 annual gift, a gift of $20,000 at death.

  • For $5000 it is $100,000.

I think some people believe that they don't have enough money to remember both their family and their favorite charity, but even smaller amounts can have a lasting impact. The easiest way to do this is to name your favorite charities as beneficiaries of part of your IRA. It could save money on your estate taxes and for your heirs, and help nonprofits long after you pass away. Since we are a 501(c)3, we are tax exempt and so the full amount can be used for our mission.

If you’re reading this, you probably are already a donor to JPII Newman. Thank you for helping take responsibility for this mission. That is true stewardship. Your faith is your most important asset. And, your financial support makes it possible for young people to grow in theirs.

Are you interested in leaving JPII Newman in your will or estate? We’d sure love to know so you can join our John Paul the Great Society. Click below to see all the ways you can leave a legacy!
