Why I Lead a Bible Study
About two years ago my friend and I started to attend JPII Newman on Sundays for Mass. Each week after Mass, Alex (a missionary with FOCUS) would strike up conversation with us. We would talk about everything from classes to our fraternity. A few months later, he asked us to be a part of a Greek leader's bible study, and we agreed! Being in a bible study for the first time was very fulfilling. Alex walked us through topics that were specifically tailored to guys involved in Greek life like time management, relationships, alcohol, sex, image, and success. I was a part of the group for about a year before Alex asked me to lead a bible study for my own fraternity brothers.
As Catholics, we’re called to make disciples of all nations. So, when Alex asked me to lead a bible study for my fraternity, I hesitated and seemed a bit unsure how it would go down. I knew that I had a different perception about Greek culture after the Greek leader’s bible study, but I didn’t know how receptive the rest of my fraternity would be to it.
The reality is all of us are going to Heaven or Hell when we die, no matter what we believe in. My fraternity brothers were no exception to this church dogma.
I thought about how much time I spend with these guys on a weekly basis and how if I knew about the source of eternal life, why would I not want to share with them something of that magnitude?
Surely you would want to spend an eternity with the people that you spend the most time within this lifetime if you could.
After these thoughts ran through my head, I came to the final conclusion- I may not be able to force these guys to love God but surely, I can be an instrument for the Lord to work through in order that these guys can come to know Christ better. After a week or so, I responded to Alex’s proposal and I started to have bible study with my fraternity!
